Coalville to Hurricane

The Plan

Our plan by now was to circumnavigate the Grand Canyon as we heard that the South Rim was better than the North Rim. That meant staying at the north the night before.

Similar to Yellowstone, anywhere within a sniff of GC and you can double the price. After the previous two nights, knocking the budget for a home run, we were determined to avoid a hatrick of pain. I did a lot of TripAdvisoring and was getting nowhere.

Tip 22 – Staying anywhere in sight of Grand Canyon is expensive.

The best way to pick a place to stay?

This meant invoking male logic.

I plumped for the coolest sounding place where the motel was under $90. This meant we were staying the night in Hurricane. Oh yes we are.

Now I am thinking that this place is either prone to gunfights or catastrophic weather but no such luck. They don’t get hurricanes this far inland.

It actually received its name after a ‘whirlwind blew the top off of a buggy that Erastus Snow was riding in. Snow exclaimed, “Well, that was a Hurricane. We’ll name this ‘Hurricane Hill’. So basically, a gust of wind blew the canopy off a pram 🙁

We stayed at the Travelodge in Hurricane and was ok but a bit tired. We arrived late and left early so never used the pool, but it looks nice in the pictures. A bargain for just $80 though.

Tip 23 – If you are travelling by car, you have more flexibility, so stay a bit further away from the landmark and the cost reduces massively.
