Travel insurance can be a bit more complicated when travelling to the US and Canada. This is in part due to their extravagantly expensive health system and litigious society.
We decided to look at various places including the comparison sites and also direct sites, which were advertised in newspapers and other publications. These vary quite a lot in terms of cost depending on the amount of cover you require and other features. At the end of the day, we wondered if there is a difference between £2m and £20m of cover. I reckoned that £20m would be enough to pay for a plane full of passengers, so sometimes, these big numbers have to be taken with a pinch of salt.
I have no idea what constitutes the best cover, but I looked across all of the policies and then combed review sites for feedback from people who have actually needed to claim. This is where you start to find differences between the providers. We ended up buying a Premium policy from Direct Travel Insurance – who we already had a European policy with actually.
Another tip here is to use cashback sites. In the end we used Quidco again and the £142 premium reduced by nearly £40! At just over £100 for a family premium policy to the US and Canada, this was a pretty good deal.
